IT'S almost 40 years since Blue Heelers icon John Wood performed to a Newcastle audience.

He returned last night as Jock in David Williamson's play The Club, which is based on the political workings of a Victorian football club.

"It's a mistake to think it's about AFL football; it could be about a mothers' club," he said soon after arriving at the Civic Theatre yesterday afternoon.

"It's really about any sort of committee with in-built jealousies, rivalries and hatreds.

"The play is 30 years old but it's still immensely relevant."

Wood said the play had attracted a wide range of audiences during its tour of Australia.

By the time the tour finishes in June, the play will have been performed 130 times in 74 theatres across the country.

Newcastle audiences have more opportunities to catch The Club, the show is playing tomorrow and twice on Saturday.
